Avoid Problems Before They Occur
Prevention and Protection Tips
Recovery from a disaster, regardless of the size, can be a time-consuming process. To minimize the time needed to restore your home or office to its normal routine:
- Keep insurance policies up to date. Double-check to see that all items of value are listed and insured for the replacement value. Office equipment in particular can be expensive to replace, and if not insured for the replacement value, you will receive reimbursement only for the depreciated value of the item.
- Keep photographs or videotapes of valuable items in a safety deposit box or other place.
- Have coins, jewelry, or other collectible items appraised every five to ten years, and update your insurance policies.
- Check the batteries in smoke detectors once a year, and have at least one fire extinguisher available per floor, plus one for the garage.
